Abstract
Throughout the centuries, plant secondary metabolites obtained from plant tissues have been used as traditional medicines because of their biological activities. Plant cells grown in suspension culture bioreactors are favorable from an industrial standpoint, compared with direct extraction from plant organs/tissues, to produce a bioactive compound due to their sustainability, controllability, and reproducibility. This study aims to develop Andrographis paniculate (AP) cell suspension culture, as a model plant-based system, to produce andrographolide, a bioactive compound showing anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anticancer, and anti-hepatitis activities. Spent culture media and AP cell extract will be tested to compare their in vitro anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. The concentrations of andrographolide in the spent culture media and the cell extract will be quantified and compared using HPLC.
