Abstract
Bandung Urban Area has developed into The Greater Bandung Metropolitan Area. This development resulted in inciting the massive work commuting activity to the workplace in the center of city. That particular activity caused the increasing level of stress among the commuters, which led to stress-induced illness and disrupted work producitivity. The purpose of this research is to describe the stress level which experienced by the commuters as well as to acknowledge the type of vehicle which they used for daily commuting activity. The research method would utilize the neuroscience approach namely EEG (electroencephalograph) measurements. The utilization of EEG device is conducted by installing the electrode bandana on the head skin through the area behind ears. The EEG recording instrument which harnessed for this research is The Emotiv EPOC X. The device is capable of recording the EEG data which is channelled into 4 channels with electrodes on each channel namely AF7, AF8, TP9, and TP10. Also, this device is capable in recording the brain waves up to 43 Hz. EEG data collection and responses would be extracted from 20 random commuters who actively departing from their home to the workplace. Respondents’ brain waves would be measured through headset device (Emotive EPOC X) and actively live-recording the EEG which connected to the laptop to record and store the input data. Respondents would be given the stimulation video related to the commuting travel pattern and the occurrence of traffic jams in Bandung City. After EEG data recording concluded, respondents would be asked to answer the several questions for validation and provide the assessment of their state of mind while actively commuting. The questions are post-test related to stress level. The analysis would be conducted using Matlab and its extended program called EEGLAB as well as the assistance of Microsoft Excel. The discovery of brain wave patterns would be determined by the result of brain waves data filtering which obviously authentic and distinctive for each respondent. The results which observed from these respondents would show an occurrence of significant stressful experience. This findings could provide the proof to represent the stress level experienced by commuter in Bandung City as well as the consideration matter for regulating the vehicle and traffic policy within Bandung Urban Area.
