คำอธิบายโดยย่อ
A military helmet is among the most essential military gear, protecting users from pressure fields and/or impact forces from missions and training. The head injury can occur abruptly from a severe impact or over time from repeated impacts as seen in boxers and American football players. A repeated impact can eventually lead to a concussion or traumatic brain injury which can greatly affect brain functioning. At present, there exists no medical treatment which can fully cure the concussion. Therefore, the development of effective headgear is very important for the well-being and safety of military personals. Nowadays, most military helmets are imported, which leads to the trade deficit of this product. Moreover, the annual market of this product is estimated to be as high as several hundred million Baht. Therefore, the present project aims to develop a military helmet which has a lightweight but exhibits high impact absorbing ability. We will integrate the use of lattice structures, 3d-printing technology, and computational tool to design and develop 3d-printed lightweight military helmets for high-impact applications. In the beginning, various lattice structures made of different polymers will be tested for their energy absorption under different loading conditions. Both experiments and numerical modeling will be utilized so that a comprehensive understanding of the material-structure-property relationship could be established. Followingly, selected lattice structures and polymeric materials will be used to design and manufacture the support cushion of a military helmet. Several tests will be carried out under respective military and industrial standards to compare existing helmets and ones developed in the present work. The performance, cost, and durability of existing and new helmets will be thoroughly compared. Upon the completion of this project, we hope to establish the technical know-how which allows us to design and build a high-quality military helmet. In addition, a performance-proven helmet will give us an opportunity for subsequent commercialization. This project is a collaboration between the Faculty of Science, KMUTT, Faculty of Engineering, KMUTT, and Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy. The Faculty of Science will be responsible for providing materials that are suited for the energy-absorbing application. The Faculty of Engineering will design, manufacture, and test the helmet prototype. Lastly, the Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy, who is the targeted user for this product, can provide feedback and conduct field testing to ensure that the developed product is suitable and assistive to the missions and training of the Thai military.
