Abstract
STEM based learning is an interdisciplinary learning that connects the concepts of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to the real world context. This can enhance learning motivation, improve student achievements and promote 21st century Skills. This qualitative research aims to explore outcomes of postgraduate students in the Science Education Program while they are creating mathematical models to solve real life problems. To make mathematical models, the students follow the iterative process consisting of six components 1. Defining the problem statement, 2. Making assumptions, 3. Defining variables, 4. Getting a solution, 5. Model analysis and assessment, and 6. Reporting the results. A number of studies indicated that the perspective of creating mathematical modeling in education is consistent with the integrated STEM education approach. Data collection tools included individual and group of student work samples, presentations, reports, examination papers and teacher notes. The examination was categorized into six parts corresponding to the objectives of those six steps. For example, students may show their understanding or creativity from interesting problem statements that they defined in the first step. The overall outcomes were also analyzed. In summary, the students demonstrate the STEM literacy; they are able to integrate knowledge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to create mathematical models that describe real word problems. Additionally, they are able to work with a team and have technology literacy.
