Abstract

Aluminum-nickel-manganese (Al-Ni-Mn) alloys show excellent thermal stability, however, the strength of this alloy is not high enough and needs to be further improved. In this study, scandium (Sc) and zirconium (Zr) were added to the ternary Al-4Ni-2Mn alloy for improving the mechanical properties. Investigated alloys (with 0.1Sc+0.2Zr and 0.2Sc+0.4Zr wt.%) are studied through the macrostructure, microstructure, and hardness during isochronal and isothermal aging. It was found that the addition of Sc and Zr had an effect on the grain size of Al-4Ni-2Mn alloy. The addition of 0.2Sc wt.% and 0.4Zr wt.% obviously reduced the grain size of Al-4Ni-2Mn alloys, due to the formation of primary Al3(Sc,Zr) as nuclei for the primary α-Al grains. The hardness of Al-4Ni-2Mn alloy increases by the addition of Sc and Zr. The Al-4Ni-2Mn alloy maintains a constant hardness after aging at 375°C up to 720 h. Finally, Al-4Ni-2Mn with the additions of Sc and Zr was determined to have the greatest potential to be utilized as load-bearing structures at elevated temperatures.
