Abstract

Inquiry-based learning (IBL) is a student-centered approach to education that emphasizes
active engagement, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Based on the authors’ experiences,
undergraduate students have difficulty in applying knowledge to real world problems. The
authors then implement inquiry-based learning through ordinary differential equation courses
where class activities and group projects are designed to develop understanding in modeling
real world applications with differential equations. Assessing worksheets, quizzes, summative
exams, and teaching evaluation form, we found that the inquiry-based activities improve deeper
learning skills compared to traditional lecture styles. Group activities also encourage peer
learning environment. It is evident that a suitable amount of time spent for inquiry-based
activities and an amount of time for growing basic knowledge are important as most students
who has good scores on applying learning outcomes needs good performance on fundamental
learning outcomes.
