Abstract
Nanomaterials have been gaining significant interest recently, where they can be fabricated via various methods. This work was carried out to study the production of titanium-based nanoparticles by a die sinking typed electrical discharge machine (EDM). The small sink bath was designed and built for the nanoparticle production in a limited volume to protect the leakage of the obtained nanoparticles through the filter system in EDM. The titanium bar was milled under a dielectric oil. The obtained nanoparticles were separated from the oil, and then the morphology of the titanium nanoparticles was examined through a scanning electron microscope. It was found that the particle size of nanoparticles was less than 100 nm. From the examination of crystal structures via an X-ray diffractometer, it was found that the titanium nanoparticles obtained were titanium carbide which was caused by the reaction of carbon from the oil with the metal.
