Abstract

This research investigates the impacts of climate change on agriculture in Thailand, focusing on Rice (Oryza sativa) and highlights the multifaceted role of the Palmyra palm (Borassus flabellifer) in climate change adaptation. The study employs secondary study and qualitative methods, particularly interviews with key informants from the case study area, to explore the multifaceted effects of climate change on agricultural practices, livelihoods, and community dynamics. The findings reveal a concerning trend of continuing loss of productivity in rice due to environmental shifts attributed to climate change. Farmers indicated the experiencing significant economic hardships, including income loss and indebtedness, as their yields diminish. The Palmyra palm can play a role in climate change adaptation in various regions, including the western part of Thailand, such as drought resistance, economic opportunities, biodiversity support, carbon sequestration, and landslide protection. The case study in Ban Lat District, Phet Buri province, highlights the multifaceted role of the Palmyra palm (Borassus flabellifer) in climate change adaptation. The unique spatial advantage of the district, traditional knowledge of utilizing Palmyra palm products, contributes to the community's resilience. Moreover, the social fabric of agricultural communities is undergoing transformation as farmers seek to mitigate the impacts of climate change by forging collaborative networks. These networks extend beyond the farming community and include local governmental and academic sectors, indicating a collective effort towards sustainable agricultural management. This study underscores the urgent need for adaptive strategies and policy interventions to address the complex challenges posed by climate change in Thai agriculture. By fostering collaborative partnerships and knowledge-sharing among stakeholders, there is potential to build resilience and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on agricultural livelihoods and rural communities.the adverse effects of climate change on agricultural livelihoods and rural communities.
