Abstract
Reinforced concrete structures with masonry walls are
widely used in Thailand and across the globe. This type of
building causes complex behaviors due to interactions between
the building frame and the masonry walls. It has a direct impact
on building behavior. However, in other circumstances, it may
have negative impact and cause an established pattern of
failure. This research investigates the effects of unevenness
caused by masonry walls in office buildings under seismic
response. Using the multi-strut macro-model, the masonry walls
are simulated by an equivalent compressive strut. The research
considered two typical office buildings: those with irregularly
formed masonry walls and those with regular shapes. Compare
the effects of masonry walls on building structures. Model-based
performance assessment uses earthquake accelerations at the
design basis of the earthquake and the maximum considered
earthquake level. The study found that both types of office
buildings have similar behavior and damage, namely soft-story
behavior on the building structure. Under the design
basis earthquake level, Influence of irregular shape due to filled
walls. As a result, the probabilities of significant building damage
and collapse are more than 60% and 15%, respectively. Under
the maximum considered earthquake level, the two building
shapes have the same high probability of severe damage and
collapse and are not significantly different.
