Abstract
"Narrative of Residential Design," a comprehensive textbook tailored for an elective class aimed at elevating the abilities of designers. This textbook is designed to provide valuable tips and techniques that enhance students' skills and strategies within the School of Architecture and Design (SoA+D) for a cross-disciplinary program of architecture, interior architecture, design innovation, communication design, and landscape architecture at King Mongkut’s University Technology Thonburi (KMUTT)
As a discipline, architecture is a captivating blend of artistic expression and scientific precision. Architectural design integrates art and science seamlessly, and at its core lies a profound humanistic approach. This approach draws from the collective experiences and needs of the building’s future occupants. Therefore, mastering narrative skills is paramount in equipping designers to effectively convey and sequence their design concepts.
Narrative methodology is pivotal in the design process, serving as the driving force behind the "why" of our design choices. It is a cohesive element, ensuring aesthetic harmony throughout a design proposal.
The knowledge presented in this course is divided into two distinct parts:
Techniques of Narrative Creation: This section correlates narrative skills with visual storytelling proficiency. It draws inspiration from various artistic and cinematic processes, offering students a toolkit for effective narrative generation.
Narrative Application in Design: The second section of the textbook is into the practical implementation of narrative within architectural design. Exploring how narrative serves as a guiding force in addressing social requirements. Numerous case studies demonstrate how design solutions have been derived in response to scenario-driven market research and societal demands for improvement. These examples show how storytelling can be a powerful tool, enhancing their ability to comprehend and address complex design scenarios.
