B-pillar is one of the main components for absorbing impact energy and protecting passengers during side crash accidents. In addition, the automotive industry commonly requires lightweight design and high crashworthiness at the same time. Advanced manufacturing techniques, such as forming of various tailor-welded blanks, have been developed for novel B-pillar. Thus, this work aims to analyse and investigate the crashworthiness of a B-pillar using tailor-welded blank by means of finite element simulations. Effects of different welding orientations and positions on energy absorption characteristics were examined. Tensile tests of specimens were firstly performed, for which steel sheet grades 600 and 1000 of the same thickness were lasers welded in the transverse and longitudinal direction. Then, the stress-strain properties of the weld zone were determined using the rule of mixture theory. By the simulations, crash performances of the tailor-welded B-pillars with various configurations were investigated. The results showed that the transverse welding line was appropriate since it provided high energy absorption (EA) value. The transverse welding located at the lower position also showed higher EA and connecting point of the tailored-welded blank of the B-pillar was thus recommended. © 2024 Author(s).
