Abstract

A common inflammatory reaction that affects denture carriers is denture stomatitis involved mucous membrane under the denture's base. Candida albicans is a normal microflora found on skin and mucosal surfaces. The biofilm of C. albicans is frequently the cause of denture stomatitis. Recently, glycolipid biosurfactants have picked up particular interest in their biodegradability, low toxicity and bioactivity. As acrylic resin; polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is the most fabric utilized within the manufacture of dentures, this study aimed to investigate antibiofilm and antiadhesion ability of glycolipid biosurfactant on the acrylic resin material. Xylolipid and sophorolipid are glycolipid biosurfactant produced from yeast Meyerozyma guilliermondii and Starmerella riodocensis, respectively. This work, crude xylolipid and sophorolipid showed ability to inhibit the metabolic activity of C. albicans biofilm on acrylic resin disk at BIC50 of 2000 μg mL-1 and BIC80 of 4000 μg mL-1, respectively. Moreover, the glycolipid biosurfactant xylolipid presented potent ability to inhibit C. albicans adhesion on acrylic disk which can inhibit cells adhesion more than 50% at 64 μg mL-1 concentration. This antibiofilm and antiadhesion activity of glycolipid biosurfactant may provide a valuable outcome in treatment of denture stomatitis.
