Abstract

Currently, deep drawing and redrawing are the primary methods used to create beverage cans. Research to increase the efficiency of this procedure is ongoing. This study aimed to improve the formability of redrawn cups by proposing a new technique, wherein a multi-die radius (MDR) die was used as a deep drawing die for producing deep-drawn cups and then redrawn once more to create the redrawn cup. It was found that a more uniformly deformed grain microstructure evolutions and cup wall thickness around the cup were achieved in the case of the MDR deep-drawing process compared with the conventional deep-drawing process. However, using the MDR deep-drawn cups to fabricate redrawn cup, the formability in terms of LDR could not be increased. However the formability in terms of cup wall thickness can be significantly increased by approximately 7% thicker.
