Purpose: This study evaluated the effectiveness of combining geocell installations and Ruzi grass for slope erosion control under varying rainfall intensities and slopes. Reductions in runoff, soil erosion, and soil transport were quantified, providing insights into sustainable and practical erosion management solutions for steep terrains. Materials and methods: Erosion tests were conducted using soil samples from the Lamtakong Dam area in a flume simulating slopes of 30°, 45°, and 60°. Geocells were installed in various patterns, and rainfall intensities of 100, 130, and 170 mm/hr were applied. The runoff rate, soil erosion rate, and soil concentration were measured, and reduction ratios were calculated. Ruzi grass was planted and tested at different growth stages to evaluate its effect on erosion control. Results and discussion: This study revealed that geocell installations effectively reduced runoff rates by 42%, soil erosion rates by 43.5%, and soil concentrations by 43.8%. The addition of mature Ruzi grass further improved erosion control by 15–20%, enhancing soil retention and delaying runoff. Geocells were most influential on moderate slopes, whereas steeper slopes required greater coverage. The combined use of geocells and Ruzi grass demonstrated a sustainable and efficient solution for slope erosion control under varying rainfall and slope conditions. Conclusion: The combination of geocells and Ruzi grass provides a practical and sustainable solution for slope erosion control. Geocells effectively reduce runoff and soil erosion, whereas Ruzi grass enhances soil retention and stabilizes soil. This integrated approach is adaptable to varying slopes and rainfall intensities, making it a reliable method for managing erosion in vulnerable areas. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.
