Abstract

Background and Significance

This digital 3D sculpture represents the concept of empathy through a fusion of anatomical features and the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi. The piece presents an anatomical human heart, meticulously crafted using 3D modeling techniques, adorned with gold-filled cracks in the style of Kintsugi. It reveals intricate anatomical details of the human heart while symbolizing the beauty of restoration and the strength found in vulnerability.

Objectives of the Creation

  1. To evoke empathy – This artwork aims to inspire viewers to reflect on the role of empathy in healing and strengthening human connections within society.

  2. To connect art and philosophy – The integration of anatomical form and Kintsugi philosophy is intended to spark dialogue between art, medicine, and cultural tradition, fostering a more comprehensive understanding of empathy.

  3. To explore the potential of digital art – Created through digital sculpting in 3D software, this piece demonstrates the capability of digital art to convey complexity and emotional depth in tangible form, while encouraging broader appreciation for digital media.

Concept

Heart's Resilience conveys empathy as a powerful and transformative force that can heal and fortify those who receive it. By merging the anatomical heart—an emblem of life and emotion—with the art of Kintsugi, this work embodies the philosophy that beauty can arise from imperfection and damage. Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with gold, silver, or platinum, is employed here to express that a heart once broken and scarred can be healed with empathy, becoming more beautiful and stronger than before.

Creative Process

The process began with in-depth anatomical research and sketching to ensure accurate representation. 3D modeling software was then used to construct the heart and its elements, with careful attention paid to surface detail and realism. After the heart form was completed, cracks were added in place of veins, and these were filled with gold using the Kintsugi technique. In the final step, the completed heart was positioned within a digital scene, with lighting and shadows adjusted to enhance visual impact and depth.

Conclusion and Discussion

Heart’s Resilience is a digital sculpture that combines the anatomical intricacy of the human heart with the Japanese Kintsugi tradition to express empathy and healing. It depicts a heart marked by fractures, repaired and nourished by golden veins that give rise to blooming flowers within—symbolizing the beauty and strength born from restoration and overcoming adversity. The use of digital sculpting technology adds to the realism and expressiveness of the work. This fusion reflects the intersection of Eastern philosophy and culture while promoting a deeper appreciation for digital art and the healing power of empathy.
