Flat wagon underframe is one of the main components of freight wagons, on which goods, oil, gas containers or tanks are transported. In this work, load bearing capacities of the underframe structure were investigated by means of combined experimental and finite element analysis (FEA). Different load cases including vertical load, jacking load and one end lifting load were applied in accordance with concerned railway requirements. For capturing deformations of loaded underframe, strain gauges were applied at all key locations with high stress concentrations identified by FE results and along the whole span length of middle sill, side sill and cantilever of the structure. It was shown that deformations at varying local areas of structure obtained by strain gauges and FE simulations fairly agreed for all loading conditions. Moreover, calculated overall deflections of the underframe under vertical load were well validated by data of laser displacement tracker. The fabricated wagon accomplished all strength requirements according to International Union Railways (UIC577), British Standard (BS EN 12663-2:2010) and Association of American Railroads (AAR Section CM-1001). Finally, stress distributions at different zones including critical welded joints of the underframe subjected to the various load cases were also studied and discussed in detail. © 2025 Engineers Australia.
