Abstract

Gamma-oryzanol (GO) is a mixture of structurally related compounds isolated mainly from rice bran, which is still underexplored. However, existing research on GO is fragmented, lacking a consolidated overview of its potential applications with health benefits. This review attempts to summarize recent novel articles on the significance of GO in pharmaceutical and food industries with the recovery of these compounds using green technologies. The mechanism of antioxidant activity of GO is also evaluated. Using some databases to search publications on related fields, 83 studies were finally retrieved which were mostly published between 2008 and 2025 period. The extraction conditions with solvent polarity for GO are the key parameters affecting extraction efficiency and quality due to chemical complexity in phytosteryl ferulates. The subcritical liquified dimethyl ether approach displayed high extraction efficiency with higher GO content (48.65 mg/g) from rice bran acid oil compared to supercritical CO2 (25.69 mg/g). GO exerts health benefits in various pathologies where oxidative stress is affecting life quality. Cholesterol-lowering activity of GO is the most effective therapeutic benefits of GO as it limits LPS-mediated COX-2 expression. This review will provide potential insights on the possible applications of GO in food and pharmaceutical industries with facilitating advancements in relevant fields. © 2025 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
