Abstract

During these years, cities around the world experienced environmental stress. Bangkok also experienced environmental pressures like carbon emissions, environmental destruction, and pollution. However, there is a strong need for sustainable, low-carbon development. The Bangmod canal area is both vulnerable and promising for these efforts due to its special cultural context, low population density, and traditional lifestyles. While some local businesses in the area, like Baan Mumin and Safetist Farm, practice low-carbon and eco-friendly methods, their impact remains small and not fully integrated on a bigger scale. This research focuses on carbon emissions sources for businesses in the Bangmod community and recommends a particle road map toward a low-carbon community. It finds out the research question: what are the main carbon emission sources for community-based businesses in the Bangmod Canal area, and what planning can help in developing a low-carbon community in the long term? By adopting a mixed-methods research approach, we carried out semi-structured interviews with three SMEs and collected secondary carbon footprint data for eight local businesses, such as food, craft works, and eco-tourism. Major findings show that infrastructure and production processes are the major sources of emissions. Low-carbon practices like using solar power, organic farming, and the use of electric boats are being practiced by some SMEs. However, challenges like insufficient infrastructure, lack of policy promotion, and low community awareness still remain. The research adds a data-driven roadmap for strategic intervention across four sectors: awareness generation and education, business green promotion, infrastructure and policy, and community outreach. The framework presents practical recommendations for making Bangmod a low-carbon model for urban development.
