Abstract
Titanium Nitride (TiN), Titanium Carbonitride (TiCN), and Diamond-Like
Carbon (DLC) were used to study the effects of film properties on the tribological properties
under dry condition of films prepared by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) process.
Titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V was selected as the substrate material. The coefficient of friction
was measured using the Ball-on-Disk method with a tribometer operating at a rotational
speed of 3.14 cm/sec for 3,000 cycles under normal loads of 1N, 2N, and 5N. The results
indicate that the friction coefficient of all films decreased with increasing normal load from
1N to 5N. The DLC film had the lowest coefficient of friction of 0.38, 0.26 and 0.19 at 1N,
2N and 5N normal load, respectively, attributed to its high surface hardness and graphitelike
structure.
