Abstract

This study aimed to develop extreme wetting surfaces on Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) using laser surface texturing and to evaluate their biocompatibility. The surface texturing process used a nanosecond pulse laser to create shallow grooves with varying spacing distances (70, 140, 210, and 280 μm) on the Ti64 surface. The roughness, wettability, and cytotoxicity of the modified surfaces were characterized. Laser texturing effectively altered the surface properties of Ti64, influencing its roughness and wettability. The textured surfaces, except for Ti64-L70, exhibited a progressive increase in superhydrophilicity from day 0 to day 10. Cytotoxicity tests revealed no toxicity in the laser-textured samples against L929 cell line. This study demonstrates that laser surface texturing is a promising method for modifying Ti64 surfaces for biomedical applications.
