The installation of a hard X-ray spectrometer based on a novel pure LaCl3 scintillation detector on Thailand Tokamak-1 (TT-1) will further enhance the understanding of TT-1 plasmas and support progress toward high-performance operation. In this study, the characterization of the pure LaCl3 scintillation detector was carried out across a hard X-ray energy range extending from several keV to the MeV region to verify its potential for hard X-ray spectroscopy. The intrinsic background radiation of the crystal was quantified to provide baseline information for assessing the suitability of the pure LaCl3 scintillation detector in low-count-rate hard X-ray spectroscopy measurements. The pure LaCl3 scintillation detector achieved an energy resolution of approximately 4.38% at 662 keV. The pure LaCl3 scintillation detector demonstrated a reliable proportional response to X-ray sources in both energy scale and spectral shape, as verified through measurements of mean energy and energy broadening. The results confirm that the novel pure LaCl3 scintillation detector demonstrates good spectroscopic performance and a stable response across the hard X-ray energy range, highlighting its feasibility as a compact hard X-ray spectrometer for TT-1 and future fusion devices. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd.
