Abstract
The development of Acoustic Emission (AE) testing in Southeast Asia has progressed steadily since the 1990s, initially driven by university-based researchers who studied and trained abroad in non-destructive testing (NDT) technologies. AE was first introduced as a passive NDT method, recognized for its advanced capabilities in online structural monitoring and material integrity assessment. Over time, academic institutions across the region particularly, in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, expanded AE research including source location algorithms, corrosion monitoring, leak detection, and material integrity analysis. These foundational studies laid the groundwork for industrial applications in petrochemical plants, power facilities, and infrastructure projects.
Between 2000 and 2015, AE testing gained momentum across Southeast Asia due to growing industrial demand for in-service inspection of both stationary and rotating components, such as storage tanks, pressure vessels, piping systems, and turbine engines. AE methods were widely adopted for corrosion evaluation, crack propagation analysis, and leak detection, especially for natural gas cylinders, contributing to predictive maintenance strategies. The increasing volume and complexity of AE data during this period prompted the development of advanced signal classification and interpretation techniques.
In recent years, AE applications have expanded into Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia, where they are primarily used in the oil & gas and petrochemical sectors. Concurrently, AE research has entered a new phase marked by the integration of machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence. These technologies are significantly enhancing signal classification accuracy and damage characterization, enabling smarter diagnostics and real-time decision-making. AE is also finding emerging applications in the automotive, railway, and aerospace sectors, aligning with national priorities in sustainable mobility, asset integrity, and smart infrastructure development. As Southeast Asia continues to invest in industrial innovation and digital transformation, AE testing technology stands out as a vital tool for ensuring safety, reliability, and efficiency across critical systems.
