Abstract

This chapter examines the scope for organohalide measurement by electroanalytical means. The main industrial sources of organohalide entry into the environment are listed, along with their toxicities and the regulatory requirements for their detection. The conventional, i.e., non-electrochemical, procedures for organohalide measurement are described. The direct electrode reactions of organohalides are summarized, as well as the chemical reactions of organohalides with redox mediators and microorganisms. The application of these reactions to electrochemical organohalide sensing are reviewed, and possible roles for organohalide electroanalysis are discussed in light of the established non-electrochemical methods currently being used. ฉ 2009 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
