Nickel and cobalt can be extracted from spent nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries by hydrometallurgical and electrochemical processes. In this work, the electrodes of spent battery are dissolved in 2 M sulfuric acid at 30, 45 and 60ฐC for 3 and 4 hrss. The experiments show that the leaching percentage of electrodes was about 75% at 30ฐC and increases upto approximately 80% when dissolve temperature is 60ฐC. Additionally, increasing time does not significantly increase leaching percentage of the electrodes except that dissolved at 60ฐC. The solution after leaching contains nickel, cobalt, manganese, aluminum, zinc, lanthanum and cerium. Other metals except nickel and cobalt were extracted by 25% bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) in kerosene at the ratio of organic to aqueous phase of 1:3, 1:1 and 3:1, respectively. The extractions were conducted at 30 ฐC and pH of 2. Afterward, nickel-cobalt alloys were synthesized by electrowinning process with current densities of 2 and 4 A/dm2, temperatures of 30 and 45 ฐC and pH of 2 and 4. Effects of current density, deposition temperature and pH on current efficiency and deposition rate are given in the paper.
