This paper presents the nonlinear static analysis of a deep water axisymmetric half drop shell storage container by using a membrane shell theory. In a half drop shell, it is fully filled with an incompressible fluid, and the internal pressure is assumed to be constant. At this state, the geometric configuration is known; the strains and displaced configuration of shell are computed by the traditional shell analysis. The shell is then subjected to linearly hydrostatic external pressure along the depth, while the volume of the shell and contained fluid are unchangeable. In this study, the shell is simulated using onedimensional beam elements and the small displacement theory is used to calculate the initial strains. The static response of the shell can be obtained by using the principle of stationary potential energy and finite element method. Energy functional of the shell is derived from the variation principle in terms of displacements and expressed in the appropriate forms. Numerical results of the shell displacements with various water depths and thicknesses are demonstrated. Copyright ฉ 2012 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).
