In recent years, the complicated geometry with the high quality of deep drawn parts is increasingly required. To achieve these requirements, the draw bead is applied for controlling the smoothness of material flow as well as preventing the major defects such as poor sidewall feature and fracture. However, due to the lack of research on parameter design of draw bead, a suitable design of draw-bead parameters is hardly determined. In this study, the finite element method (FEM) simulation, the Taguchi technique, and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) techniques were carried out to investigate the degree of importance of draw-bead parameters. The mechanism of sidewall feature (concave/convex) and sidewall thinning were investigated and clearly identified using the FEM simulation. The statistical analysis results revealed that the bead height has a major influence on the concave sidewall and sidewall thinning, followed by the bead distance and bead width respectively. The FEM simulation results, as validated by laboratory experiments, showed a good agreement with the experimental results with the error of approximately 2% in the material thickness. ฉ 2012 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
