Abstract
Soda lime silicate glasses lightly doped copper oxide were prepared in the chemical composition; (65-x)SiO2: 25Na2O: 10CaO: xCuO, where 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5 mol% and 1500°C melting-temperature. The density and the refractive index of the glass samples were increased with increasing concentration of copper oxide while the molar volumes showed the inversed trend. It indicates that the glass structure was more compacted, with increasing of copper oxide concentration. The optical absorption of all samples showed a dominated broad absorption center at around 790 nm due to Cu2+ ions. © 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
