บทคัดย่อ

Palm oil empty fruit bunch (EFB) is a large quantity by-product of palm oil milling process. It is now being used as a fertilizer in palm plantation. Therefore, there is need to find way to utilize EFB to increase its value as well as lessen environmental problem of the abundance biomass waste. The objectives of our research are to determine the suitable ratio of EFB to recycled pulp and to determine the effect of its use as a liner and medium of corrugated board. The ratios of EFB to recycled pulp that were studied include 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100. EFB pulp was produced by chemical pulping with sodium hydroxide at the concentration of 26%. The pulp was mixed with recycled pulp and form into a sheet. The papers were tested for the basis weight, thickness, apparent density, burst strength, tensile strength, and tear strength. The result shows that the highest apparent density was obtained when there was only EFB alone or recycled pulp alone for 120 g.m-2 paper. The apparent density was not affected by the ratio. For mechanical properties and flat and ring crush resistance, burst strength was not affected by the ratio while tear resistance of 120 g.m-2 paper and tensile strength and tear resistance of 230 g.m-2 paper. The EFB to recycled pulp ratio that yielded the best properties was 75:25. This ratio was then used for making either liner(s), medium or both in the corrugated board. Several combinations were tested and it was observed that the reduction of edge crush resistances increased with an increasing numbers of layer being substituted.
