บทคัดย่อ
The economic crisis in 1997 caused tremendous changes to highereducation system in Thailand, in particular the decentralization ofuniversity’s administration. A number of Thai public universities have beengradually transforming to be autonomous universities. However, almostall cannot achieve the most important goal for academic excellence asreflected by global recognition. During the transitional period, King Mongkut’sUniversity of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) was the only publicuniversity that transformed from a university under the Civil Services to be an autonomous public university. The university could sustain as one of theleading universities and be ranked in the top 400 World university by TimesHigher Education (THE). It relatively outperformed other universities and wasregarded as a role model for Thai higher education development. This researchaimed to figure out how autonomous public universities could manage to securefrom the Thai bureaucratic system and innovate themselves to sustaincontinuous improvement in the world class university leagues. Key factorsinfluencing autonomous public university to be recognized as a leading andworld-class university were explored. Research data were studied and gatheredfrom primary source by an in-depth interview from KMUTT managementteams and other relevant stakeholders. Secondary data were also used such asthe university’s documents and other related studies. Findings from descriptiveand content analysis revealed that leadership and teamwork have played crucialroles for KMUTT during the transitional period. KMUTT aims to make astrategic change in three major areas that can boost the university’scompetitiveness. The first area of change deals with the leader’s vision. Theuniversity has been through the structural transformation, and it now becomesan autonomous university. The second area concerns with the universitydevelopment in terms of innovation as it aim to become an innovativeorganization. The third area relates to the question of how to develop theuniversity in a sustainable way. It focuses on building the strength in threemajor aspects (social, economic and environment) from effective internalmanagement. The aforementioned change results in the university becomingboth a leading institution in science and technology in Thailand and one of thesuccessful universities in the world.
