Due to a significant issue related to open burning of rice straw residues, an alternative approach to convert the agro-residues into a solid fuel briquette is considered. Fuel briquettes from rice straw were prepared under different conditions based on variations of three main parameters, namely, particle size of the rice straw, ratio of bagasse binder, and briquetting pressure. The particle size and the briquetting pressure substantially affected the density of the briquette. The biomass briquette with the higher percent of bagasse demonstrated higher water absorption, which may pose a problem during storing and transport of the fuel briquettes. Fuel briquette had lower heating value as compared with a charcoal. Concentrations of CO and CO2 for all three selected ratios (100:0, 80:20, and 60:40) at a briquetting pressure of 120 kg/cm2 and particle size of rice straw less than 2 mm was almost the same, but high fluctuation was noted for NOx at an earlier stage. NOx emissions reduced when nitrogen content was decreased in the composition. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 109th AWMA Annual Conference and Exhibition (New Orleans, LA 6/20-23/2016).
