Abstract

This paper presents behaviors of a remedial measure of bridge approach structure by using expanded polystyrene foam as backfi ll material to reduce an excessive settlement after 15 years of construction. Field instruments were installed to observe settlement and pore water pressure during after construction. A high settlement was occurred before remedial measures at about 1.3 m at the end of bearing unit. After remedial measure, rate of settlement tends to reduce after 100 days. Behaviours of bridge approach structure were predicted by one dimension consolidation theory and Elastic theory with consideration of ground subsidence.
