Abstract

The surface characteristics of coating materials were examined in this study, where the single layer coatings of TiN and TiAlN and the bilayer coatings of AlCrN/TiN and AlCrN/TiAlN on tungsten carbide substrate were performed by using the arc evaporation process. The surface morphology of coating layer(s) were observed and analyzed in terms of thickness, surface roughness, hardness and chemical composition. The scratch test was also performed to determine the adhesion properties of coating layer on the substrate. The investigations revealed that although the bilayer coatings caused a slightly rough surface compared to the single layer coatings, they can provide a good resistance to crack due to the high hardness of AlCrN. The critical loads for each coating material were also reported and analyzed in this paper. ฉ 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
