Abstract

At the end of 2015, all the ASEAN member countries including Thailand will become one ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) to promote regional integration. A consequence of the AEC is that there will be no taxes for the products whose origins are in the ASEAN region. Local businesses in all sectors must be prepared to compete with their counterparts from other countries within the region. Steel is an important fundamental industry in developing countries. Every year, Thailand imports over two million tons of long steel. Part of this is due to the lack of a steel smelting plant in Thailand. This paper analyzes the value-added chain of long steel products in Thailand and projects the total circulating volume up to 2017. This paper also assesses important factors influencing the long steel supply chain in Thailand, including those from the AEC, in order to recommend improvement strategies for this industry in the future. ฉ Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2015.
