Nanomaterial has been increasingly applied in several engineering components. Its advantages are such extremely small size, high surface area to volume ratio and large interfacial surface area. In this study, tribological properties of friction materials, which contain BaSO4 particles of three different sizes from nano- to micro-scale were investigated. The specimens of examined friction materials mixed with phenolic resin as matrix were produced by hot pressing technique. To ensure the nano-size of BaSO4 particles the as-delivered particles were firstly dispersed in phenolic resin solution by an ultrasonic sonication, dried and crushed to powder form. Then, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was performed to verify that the nano-sized particles were uniformly distributed in the phenolic resin powder. A chase friction material test machine was used to investigate effects of the BaSO4 fillers on the friction coefficient in dependence on applied pressure, friction stability and wear. Furthermore, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was done to examine the wear characteristics such as worn surface and contact area. The results obviously showed that the nano filler not only improved friction stability, but also increased wear resistance of the examined friction material. ฉ 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
