Abstract
Currently, good lighting design practice for neighborhood is beyond light for seeing and for safety during the nighttime. Instead, lighting for cities is to enhance its potentials by quality of luminous environment with respect to identity, spirit, function, quality of visual perception and management for sustainable social and economy.
Urban lighting design is a crucial factor in sustainable development. Good lighting design supports community business including cultural tourism, health and safety life as well as improves cultural and spiritual securities. Heritage lighting does not only enhance architectural elements and its atmosphere but also create a positive impact in supporting such activities at town level. Scope of work includes lighting design guidelines and recommendations for Chiangmai old town by taking six important temples as case studies. Those are Wat Prasinghmahawiharn, Wat Chediluangworawiharn, Wat Chiangman, Wat Prasart, Wat Puanghong and Wat Duangdee. Site observation, measurement day and night times and stakeholder interview is research method in data collection and analysis in order to synthesize into design and recommendation that best fit with its context and stakeholders.
