บทคัดย่อ

Costus inflorescence is often characterized and distinguished from relatives such as Zingiber (true ginger) by its spiraling stems. However, the main senescence symptom of Costus inflorescences accompanies visible changes which include loss of chlorophyll in the stem within 4 days after harvest and wilting bract. To ensure the best quality of flowers after harvest, treatments for extending the vase life of cut Costus inflorescences are needed. Gibberellic acid is considered to be a senescence-delaying plant growth regulator. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of cytokinin, gibberellic acid and sugar on improving the quality and extending the longevity of cut Costus inflorescences (Costus sp.). The inflorescences of Costus were held in deionized water (DI) as a control, 50 ppm 6-benzyl adenine (BA), 1% sucrose (SU), 0.5 μM gibberellic acid (GA3), and BA+GA3+SU, then placed in an observation room (21±2°C, 60-70% RH under cool-white fluorescence lights for 12 h d-1) throughout the experimental period. A 50 ppm sodium dichloroisocyanurate (DICA) was added in the vase solution in all treatments to prevent the growth of microbial. It was revealed that the combination of BA+GA3+SU and BA alone gave the best results in delaying the yellowing stem of cut Costus for 12 and 11.5 d respectively, while the control flower had more than 50% of yellowing stem within 4 d, which was closely related to the content of total chlorophyll. Treatments of BA alone, BA+GA3and BA+GA3+SU significantly increased total chlorophyll content in the stem compared to that of SU and DI although the content of total chlorophyll in all treatments continuously decreased throughout the vase period. Besides, adding BA, GA3 and SU in the vase solution induced higher accumulation of anthocyanin in the bract. The application of BA alone and combined treatment of BA+GA3+SU extended the vase life longer by 4.5 and 8 days than treatment of SU alone and the control, respectively, by delaying the degradation of chlorophyll of cut Costus stems and maintaining total anthocyanin content in bracts, thereby increasing the decorative value of flowers. © 2022 International Society for Horticultural Science.
