Abstract
This work aims to study the synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) from glucose in corncobs by
dehydration reaction by investigating the influences of acetonitrile with water, concentration of phosphoric acid
reacted with sulfuric acid, temperature and duration of reaction. From the results, it has been found that the
optimum conditions for production 5-hydroxymethyl furfural are the reaction temperature at 140 degree Celsius
and the duration of 45 min where the concentration of acetonitrile is (80%) by volume and 2 mol/L sulfuric acid
is reacted with 0.2 mol/L phosphoric acid sulfuric acid, giving the yield of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural at
(52.19±0.38%).
