Abstract

Visual inspection is a general method to determine and measure damage to concrete pavement. However, certain limitations, such as the difficulty of road closure, may lead to safety issues requiring various stakeholders’ involvement, leading to delays. To address these limitations, previous studies have suggested using high-resolution video cameras mounted on a vehicle and applying image stitching techniques to the footage. This approach requires high investment in instruments while it is only able to detect the damage location but is not able to determine the size of it. This study proposed a lower-cost approach using a typical action camera and a more advanced stitching image. The results of concrete pavement inspection show the ability to detect the location and size of the damage. With the speed of the experiment vehicle of 90 km/h, the detected damage size is 6.60% error. In addition, this proposed method can be applied to monitoring concrete pavement.
