Abstract

The objective of this research is to reduce the baggy on mill in a compound mixing process, in which the lump of hard compound is formed and unable to flow through the rollers. This adversely interrupts the mixing process and increases its loss time, thus lowering the productivity. The research focused on finding an optimum mixing condition to minimize the baggy on mill problem. Two mixing parameters were considered in this study, i.e., mixing time of 70, 75, and 80 seconds and mixing temperature of 125, 127, and 129 °C. The result showed that there was no the baggy on mill issue as well as the loss time when the viscosity of the non-productive compound was less than 64 MU. Using the mixing time of 75 seconds and the mixing temperature of 127 °C provided the lowest viscosity of 62.2 MU on average, which enabled the well-mixed compound and sufficient vulcanization. After implementing the optimum condition to the mixing process, the average loss time due to the baggy on mill reduced by 100 minutes per month, and the productivity can be improved by 66 batches per month accordingly.
