Abstract

Children frequently display problems concentrating and focusing, or may have a short attention span. This affects both the progress of their learning and may even alter their behaviors. Play therapy is one of the most well-known and widely used treatments for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Learning media have also been utilized in conjunction with play therapy. This qualitative research aimed to design and develop a board game to support the learning and skill development of children with ADHD aged 6-8 years. Our research team has designed and developed a board game that trains concentration and develops learning. Along with practicing all three executive functions (EF) skills, namely inhibition, working memory, and planning, two additional skills out of the five senses, sensory observation and touching, were also supplemented. Qualitative evaluation of the board game would be conducted via the usage assessment over two target groups: parents of children with ADHD aged 6-8 years and specialists in child and adolescent psychiatry and experts in designing board games for learning would also evaluate the quality of the board game, its aesthetics, and its functionality. The study found that children with ADHD who played the board game were more focused. They could develop executive functions (EF) and two of the five senses skills. The satisfaction data obtained from two families with children 6-8 years old with ADHD were analyzed. Significant research findings indicated that board games help strengthen concentration for ADHD children from the two levels of game mechanics: fast and slow mechanics. The slow mechanism keeps the child focused and still. On the other hand, the sensitive mechanisms allow the child to concentrate over extended periods. Moreover, the board games would help foster strong family interactions relevant to the purpose of this study.
