Abstract
This study examines Kyoto’s success as a bicycle-friendly city, focusing on urban design elements and policies that promote cycling. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research highlights the integration of cycling infrastructure with existing urban fabric, including shared roads and modified footpaths. It also emphasizes the role of bike-sharing systems for first- and last-mile connectivity, along with supportive policies and cultural integration. Economic benefits such as health cost savings and reduced carbon emissions are identified, while challenges like shared space conflicts persist. The study offers valuable lessons for other cities seeking to enhance their bicycle-friendliness.
