Abstract

This research investigates the potential of haystacks (lom-fang) as temporary learning spaces that integrate cultural heritage with nature-based education, within the context of the Karen ethnic community in Bang Khamar, Ratchaburi Province. Drawing from vernacular architecture and traditional agricultural practices, the study examines the role of small-scale architectural forms in rice fields as mediums for family-based learning.

Employing qualitative research methods, data were collected through field surveys, in-depth interviews, participatory observation, photography, and co-constructive haystack-building workshops with the community. The study analyzes the spatial patterns of cultural landscapes in rice field contexts, alongside learning behaviors and knowledge transmission within the community.

Findings reveal that the shift in settlement patterns—from forest-based living to semi-urban adaptation—and the fragmentation of land plots have contributed to the disappearance of small-scale rice field structures that once served as intergenerational learning environments. Furthermore, the spatial attributes—such as location, size, and internal zoning—significantly influence imagination and cultural perception, shaping the community’s understanding of knowledge systems rooted in ecological adaptation.

This research contributes to ongoing discussions on the revitalization of cultural practices and vernacular architecture, aiming to create alternative learning environments grounded in local knowledge and indigenous wisdom.
