Abstract
Over the past decade, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) has prioritized the development of the university’s physical space and environment to foster innovation-oriented and creative learning. In the context of a traditional university, this poses a significant challenge. In 2015, KMUTT initiated a concept to create learning spaces that provide opportunities for faculty and students to exchange knowledge and experiences, leading to the co-creation of new knowledge. Consequently, the 15-story Learning Exchange (LX) building was designed to serve as a learning space that goes beyond traditional classrooms or general research laboratories. The project’s central inquiry was: 'How can space respond to the context of new learning paradigms?'
The research and design team from the Spatial Environment and Experimental Design Lab (SEED Lab), under the School of Architecture and Design (SoA+D) at KMUTT, was commissioned to design and manage the interior spaces for floors 1-6 of the LX building to align with this concept. The interior design team and design consultants, in collaboration with architects from Bangkok Tokyo Architecture and the Office of Pilin Hongwittayakorn, built upon the original spatial design by applying design theories to create diverse learning areas.
Various forms of visual and physical connectivity were deemed essential in the organization of functional spaces. Thus, the Learning Exchange building embodies KMUTT’s innovative vision, reflected through a physical environment that facilitates independent meeting, exchange, and learning, while fostering new possibilities between the internal KMUTT community and the outside world.
