บทคัดย่อ

The study aimed to diagnose students’ problems insentence structures which affect their reading comprehension.The study was conducted with 84 mixed-abilitystudents who enrolled in an undergraduate university-levelfundamental English course. The translation method wasused as a medium for data collection. The students wereasked to provide an English-Thai translation of a twelvesentencestory where seven common grammatical pointswere the concern—present and past participles, infinitivesand gerunds, passive voices, adjective clauses, and nounclauses. They were varied in distribution, and each wasfound a maximum of two times in the story. The glossaryof vocabulary presumed unknown to the students wasprovided in the passage. Two Thai raters who wereresearchers graded the students’ written work. The resultsshow that most of the students could not translate thesentences accurately since they did not know the sentencestructures. Although the students could understand thewhole meaning of the sentences, they were uncertain in the accurate use of certain grammatical points. This led to misconception and affected comprehension in reading pertaining to the deep meaning the text conveyed.
