Abstract
Effect of electrolyzed acidic water (EAW) on reducing microbial content in vase solution was studied by holding Dendrobium 'Khao Sanan' cut inflorescences in 100 ppm chlorine available electrolyzed acidic water (EAW) pH 5.5 and sterile distilled water (SDW) as a control in an observation room (21ฑ2ฐC, 70-80% RH, cool-white fluorescence lights for 12 h) throughout the vase period. The result showed that EAW was the most effective in inhibiting microbial growth in the vase solution for 14 days, while the microbial count in the control continuously increased during the vase period. EAW maintained the fresh weight and water uptake, increased the number of opening buds and induced higher respiration rate and ethylene production in flower as compared to SDW. However, no significant different was observed in the vase life of flowers in both SDW and EAW.
