Abstract
Plant diseases are one of the major problems of pepper productivity in Thailand, particularly anthracnose disease caused by Colletotrichum spp. The chemical treatment is usually used to prevent fungal infection which may leave the chemical residues on the harvested produce. The consumer now is concerned about the safety of fresh produce. Thus, the alternative treatment is needed to protect the infection. This research was aimed to investigate the effects of chitosan (abiotic elicitor) on the expression of plant defense genes of pepper cultivars 'CA1131' (resistance cultivar) and 'CA365' (susceptible cultivar). The results found that the pepper seedling 'CA1131' treated with 20 and 40 ppm chitosan showed high expression of chitinase (EC 3.2.1.14) and β-1,3 glucanase (EC 3.2.1.39) genes in comparison with non-treated seedling. Furthermore, the 'CA365' pepper seedling treated with chitosan solution at the concentration of 20 and 40 ppm also showed the high expression of both genes within 24 h after treatment. This result indicates that chitosan plays a role to induce the plant defensive enzymes to against the fungal infection in pepper plant.
