Abstract

With globalization, intercultural education has become an integralcomponent of English language education. Nonetheless, to ensure therelevance to the local setting, intercultural education may need to bemore contextualized. With the aim of better understanding thecontextualization of intercultural education, our study examined thediscourse of 15 non-local English teachers working in private secondaryschools in Bangkok, Thailand. The analysis of the participants’ discourseyielded four broad categories, with each category containing two ormore themes. These categories showed different ways in which theparticipants contextualized intercultural education. The categories were1) treatment of cultural lessons, addressing the issue of whether cultureis treated as a body of knowledge, or if it aims for an intercultural andtransformative experience; 2) cultural focus, which dealt with theintegration of local and
