Abstract
1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), extending the longevity of ethyleneinsensitive flowers in the Dendrobium flower, 'Red Sonia', was studied by pretreatments with 0 (control), 200 and 500 nlทL-1 1-MCP for 6 hours at 20ฐC, then transferred to distilled water in an observation room (21ฑ2ฐC, 70-80% RH, coolwhite fluorescence lights for 12 hours). The results showed that 1-MCP significantly prolonged the vase life as determined by flower wilting. Pretreatment with 200 nlทL-1 1-MCP had the longest vase life at day 19.3, while flowers pretreated with air (control) had 17.4 days of vase life. Additionally, 1-MCP gave better results in delaying the decreased fresh weight, respiration rate and ethylene production, and wilting of flowers and bud openings over the control treatment.
